TORCH offers a Caregiver Orientation course via our E-Learning platform that fulfills the requirements of TAC Rule §553.253(d)(1) in the Standards for Licensure portion of the HHSC State Regulations. This course is comprised of the following modules:

Lesson 1 - Your Role as a Caregiver

By the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

Understand your role as a caregiver.
Describe caregiver job responsibilities.
List qualities of an ideal caregiver.

Lesson 2 - Residents Rights and Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation

By the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

Understand the importance of having Resident Bill of Rights in assisted living facilities.
Describe the Rights of Residents living in assisted living facilities and give examples of how to protect them.
Define Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation and list examples of each.
List examples of mandatory reportable incidents.
Describe the Guidelines for reporting incidents to HHSC.

Lesson 3 - Infection Control

By the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

Define the term “infection control”.
Describe the chain of infection and how breaking one of the links in the chain can prevent the spread of infection.
Explain why the elderly are at higher risks for infection and identify signs of infection.
Discuss the importance of adhering to assisted living facilities infection control policy and procedures.
Describe standard precaution and explain some of the guidelines.
List strategies for handling equipment, linen and clothing.
Explain how and when to properly wash hands while caring for residents in assisted living facilities.
Describe transmission-based precautions and explain some of the guidelines.
Explain how to properly apply and remove PPE.

Lesson 4 - Confidentiality, HIPAA & Manager Notification

By the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

Discuss the importance of privacy and confidentiality in assisted living facilities.
Describe the HIPAA privacy rule.
Explain how HIPAA affects residents and staff in assisted living facilities.
Explain how standardized authorization forms benefit the facility.
List strategies for protecting resident’s privacy.
Identify and explain three types of confidentiality breeches.
List ways to protect confidentiality in assisted living facilities.
Identify when confidential information may need to be released.
Identify conditions when facility managers should be notified.

Lesson 5 - Emergency and Evacuation Procedure

This module is presented in two parts. By the completion of portion 1 of this course, the learner will be able to:

Describe the eight core functions of an assisted living facility disaster plan
Discuss the importance of an annual review and disaster plan training.
Explain how to debrief after a disaster.
Discuss guidelines for specific disastrous events.

By the completion of portion 2 of this course, the learner will be able to:

List examples of medical emergencies.
State the primary goal for managing a medical emergency.
State the normal values of vital signs.
Describe how to measure vital signs.
Discuss general measures for responding to medical emergencies.
List guidelines for responding to choking, fainting, seizures, shock, bleeding, poisoning and burns.

Lesson 6 - Falls and Safety Measures

By the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

Discuss the importance of following safety procedures in assisted living facilities.
Discuss common causes and contributing factors of falls and traumatic injuries.
Identify risk factors contributing to poor prognosis or death from falls.
Recognize safety hazards and describe how to maintain environmental safety in assisted living facilities.
Report concerns or use of electrical items as it pertains to resident safety.
Describe basic electrical safety controls and practices in the work environment.
State safety precautions to take when using ladders in and outside facilities.
Describe how to properly store items in assisted living facilities.
Identify measures to prevent work related hazards.

Lesson 7 - Cognitive Disabilities and Restraint Reduction

By the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

Discuss common defense mechanisms.
Review common mental health conditions.
Discuss the characteristics of Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease.
List strategies to communicate and assist with ADLS in clients with dementia and mental illness.
Discuss techniques to handle aggressive behavior and reducing the need for restraints.
List guidelines for using restraints and explain how to prevent complications.
List alternatives to using restraints.

Lesson 8 - Body Mechanics

By the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

State the benefits of using proper body mechanics and alignment.
List some examples of good body mechanic techniques.
Demonstrate skill in safely moving a client in a bed; and transferring a client to a wheelchair.

Lesson 9 - Nutrition and Safe Food Handling

By the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

Discuss the importance of good nutrition.
Discuss the importance of following the guidelines for safe food handling.
Describe different prescribed diets.
Lists ways to promote appetites.
Describe how to feed eternal nutrition clients or clients diagnosed with dysphagia.

By the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

Define stroke and describe the different types.
List the most common signs and symptoms of stroke.
Explain the importance of a quick response time.
List some modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors.

List some caregiver duties for stroke survivors.

Lesson 13 - Oxygen Therapy

By the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

Describe the respiratory system and list its functions.
Define terms used to describe respiratory symptoms.
Identify and describe some common respiratory disorders.
Describe oxygen therapy and the benefits of its use.
List diagnosis that may require oxygen therapy.
List and describe examples of oxygen sources and delivery devices.
State guidelines for using oxygen tanks and oxygen concentrators.
Describe the care of the resident receiving oxygen.
Explain how to maintain a safe environment for residents receiving oxygen.

TORCH also offers the Essential Caregiver Training course, which covers the same content as Lesson 3, above, regarding PPE and Infection Control Measures.
